Signs You Need a Hot Water Plumber

Icon of two pools of water
Hot water has stopped completely

No hot water at all usually means a failed heating element, a tripped circuit breaker or a gas supply issue. Most of these are same-day repairs.

Temperature icon
The water is lukewarm or inconsistent

If the temperature fluctuates or never quite gets hot, the thermostat or heating element is usually the cause.

Icon of an ear
The system is making noise

Banging, rumbling or popping sounds from the tank often indicate sediment buildup or a failing component.

Blocked Toilet Repair icon
Water is discoloured or rusty

Rusty or brown water coming from hot taps is a sign of internal corrosion. This usually means the tank needs replacing.

Damp icon
The system is leaking

Drips or pooling water around the base of the tank indicate a seal failure or internal corrosion. A leaking tank almost always needs replacement.

Emergency plumbing fault detection icon
The system is over 10 years old

Older systems lose efficiency and break down more frequently. If yours is over 10 to 12 years old and causing trouble, replacement is usually the better call.

Hot Water System Installations

We supply and install all types of hot water systems. Our plumbers will help you choose the right system for your home, size it correctly and install it to Australian standards.

System Types

Electric

Storage tank heated by an electric element. Lower upfront cost. Best suited to homes on off-peak electricity tariffs.

Gas

Available as storage or continuous flow. Heats water faster than electric and is generally cheaper to run. Continuous flow only heats water on demand, which suits households with varying usage patterns.

Heat Pump

Extracts warmth from surrounding air to heat water. Uses significantly less electricity than a conventional electric system. Qualifies for NSW Government rebates of $400 to $670 under the Energy Savings Scheme for eligible households upgrading from electric storage.

Solar

Solar collectors on the roof heat water during the day, with a gas or electric booster for overcast periods. High upfront cost and low running costs over the life of the system.

Not sure which system suits your home? We’ll talk through the options before we recommend anything.

Repair or Replace?

Repair makes sense when:

  • The system is under 10 years old
  • The fault is a component, not the tank itself
  • There are no signs of internal corrosion or leaks from the base
  • Repair cost is well below half the cost of a new system

Replacement is the better call when:

  • The system is over 10 to 12 years old and breaking down repeatedly
  • The tank is leaking from the base or showing visible corrosion
  • Repair costs are approaching the cost of a new system
  • You want to upgrade to a more energy-efficient system type

We’ll inspect the system and give you a straight answer. If it’s worth repairing, we’ll say so.
