A Blacktown family experienced recurring sewage backups into their home, particularly after heavy rain. CCTV inspection revealed tree roots had invaded the sewer pipe, severely restricting flow. We cleared the roots mechanically, cut out the damaged section, and installed new plastic pipe with root-resistant jointing.

The Problem

Tree roots naturally seek moisture. When they find a crack in the sewer line, they grow aggressively through the pipe, eventually blocking it completely. Symptoms included:

Temporary solutions like root-cutting (jetting) provide short-term relief but don’t fix the underlying pipe damage.

What We Did

Conducted CCTV inspection to locate roots and identify the damaged section
Mechanically removed the root mass with a high-pressure root-cutting machine
Carefully excavated the damaged sewer pipe section (approximately 10 metres)
Removed defective pipe and all remaining roots from the trench
Installed new PVC sewer pipe with tight-sealing joints (resistant to root intrusion)
Applied a root barrier treatment to surrounding soil
Backfilled and compacted the work area
Flushed the entire line and tested to Council specifications

The Result

Sewage now flows freely. Backups have stopped. The new plastic pipe, combined with root-resistant jointing and barrier treatment, provides long-term protection against future root issues.

The family can now run multiple fixtures simultaneously without drainage problems.
