Hot Water Not Working Properly?

Hot water stopped suddenly?

Probably the element, thermostat, pressure valve or pilot light. We keep common parts on the van. Most repairs happen same visit.

Running out quickly or temperature inconsistent?

System is either undersized or has a failing component. We diagnose and give you an honest call on repair vs replacement.

Whatever the situation, call . Same day. $0 call-out fee. Over 150 five-star reviews. Licence No. 371639C.

Hot Water System Replacement

Electric: Rheem, Dux, Aquamax, Thermann. Standard like-for-like swap is usually a half-day job.

Gas: continuous flow systems heat water on demand. All gas installation includes a compliance certificate.

Heat pump: uses around a third of the electricity of a conventional electric storage system. NSW Energy Savings Scheme rebates of $400 to $670 for eligible heat pump upgrades. Ask us when you call.

Heat Pump Hot Water Systems

Heat pump hot water systems pull warmth out of the surrounding air and use it to heat the water in your tank. They run on electricity but use up to 70% less than a traditional electric storage system, so running costs drop sharply over the life of the unit. The compressor and fan do the work, the tank stores the result, and the system tops up overnight or during the day, depending on your tariff.

A heat pump makes sense if your existing electric storage tank’s end of life, if your gas connection’s costing more each quarter, or if you want to take advantage of the NSW Energy Savings Scheme. The current NSW Hot Water Upgrade incentive sits between $400 and $670 for most Inner West homes, applied as an upfront discount through an accredited installer. Champion Plumbing & Drains will check your eligibility, size the unit to your household, and handle the swap with no mess and no second visit.

Stack the rebate with the $200 off hot water replacement offer on our specials page, and the upfront cost lands well below a like-for-like electric replacement. If you want a straight answer on whether a heat pump suits your home

Brands We Service

We repair, service and install every major Australian hot water brand. Same-day across the Inner West, lifetime labour warranty, $0 call-out as standard.

Rheem Hot Water

Rheem

Australia’s largest hot water manufacturer, made in Rydalmere since 1939. Rheem covers gas storage, gas continuous flow, electric storage, solar and heat pump. We carry common Rheem parts in the van, so most repairs are sorted on the first visit.

Rinnai Hot Water

Rinnai

The gold standard for continuous flow gas. Rinnai Infinity units are workhorses in Inner West terraces and apartments. We diagnose error codes, replace solenoids and flame sensors, and install new units sized to your hot water load.

BOSCH Hot Water

Bosch

German precision engineering, in the Australian market since 1907. Bosch continuous flow units suit small homes and unit conversions where space is tight. We handle service, fault-finding and full installation.

DUX Hot Water

Dux

Australian-made since 1915 and now owned by Noritz. Dux Airoheat and Sunpro heat pump units are a strong value pick for storage replacements. We service the full Dux range across electric, gas and heat pump.

Vulcan Hot Water

Vulcan

A Rheem-owned brand built around long-life gas and electric storage. If your Vulcan tank’s the original from the 80s or 90s, it’s earned its retirement. We can replace it with a modern Rheem or Vulcan unit on the same day.

Hot Water Not Working? Troubleshoot Before You Call.

Six quick checks. Run through them before you book. If any of them sound out of your depth, stop. Gas and electrical work is licensed work for a reason.

  1. Check the pilot light if you have a gas system. A pilot that’s blown out is the most common cause of no hot water. Follow the relight instructions printed on the front of the unit. If it won’t stay lit, the thermocouple’s likely the culprit and needs a licensed gas fitter.
  2. Check the breaker if you have an electric system. Open the switchboard and look for a tripped breaker labelled hot water or HWS. Flip it back on. If it trips again straight away, leave it off and book a plumber.
  3. Check the thermostat dial. Some units have an external dial set to a vacation or low setting. Turn it up to 60 degrees Celsius. Wait an hour and test the tap.
  4. Check the gas supply. If the cooktop won’t light either, the gas’s off at the meter or the tank, not the hot water system. Check the bottle if you’re on LPG.
  5. Listen for sediment. A rumbling or kettling noise from a storage tank means sediment has built up on the bottom. The unit will still produce some hot water, but not as much. Book a flush and inspection.
  6. Look for water around the base. A puddle or rust streak means the tank’s leaking and needs replacement, not repair. Turn off the supply at the isolation valve above the unit and call us. Mention ‘after hours’ if it’s tonight, we’ll route you through to the emergency line.

What to expect on price

Hot water repairs are quoted on-site once we’ve assessed the unit and confirmed the fault. A failed element, valve, or thermostat is usually a same-day fix, with parts on the van for all major brands. Full system replacements vary by type, size, and access, so we walk you through the options and the costs before anything is ordered. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Cost depends on the system type (electric, gas, heat pump or solar), tank size, and what the install needs. Heat pumps attract NSW Energy Savings Scheme rebates of $400 to $670 for eligible upgrades from electric storage. See our full pricing for the rest.

Under 10 years old with a single component fault: repair makes sense. Over 12 years old, leaking from the base, or breaking down repeatedly: replace. The cost of repeated repairs catches up with replacement fast. We inspect on site and tell you straight, no upsell.

Yes for most repairs and most installations. Element, thermostat or valve replacement is a one-visit job because we carry the common parts. Like-for-like replacement usually takes two to four hours on site. In an emergency, call us today before 12pm and we can try to get your hot water back the same day.

Electric storage tanks last 8 to 12 years. Gas storage 10 to 15. Heat pumps 15 or more. Continuous flow gas units sit in the same range as gas storage. Regular anode rod replacement extends tank life by years. If yours is past 10 and acting up, factor replacement into the conversation.

Yes. Licensed (Licence No. 371639C), fully insured, and gas-fitting qualified under AS/NZS 5601. Every gas hot water install includes a leak test and a compliance certificate. The work is backed by our lifetime labour guarantee, which covers labour for the life of the system.

If your unit’s under 8 years old and the repair cost’s less than half the price of a new unit, repair. If it’s over 10 years old, leaking from the tank, or hitting you with a third repair in two years, replace. We give you both numbers on site, then you choose. The $200 off hot water replacement offer applies to like-for-like swaps booked through Champion.

Electric storage tanks run 8 to 12 years. Gas storage and heat pump units sit at 10 to 15. Continuous flow gas and well-maintained solar can push 20. Water hardness, installation quality and yearly servicing all move the number. If yours is past its expected life and starting to play up, plan the replacement now rather than waiting for it to go cold mid-winter.

In 2026, heat pumps will be the cheapest to run for most Inner West homes, around $300 to $400 a year. Upfront, electric’s the cheapest to buy, but the running cost gap closes that lead inside three years.
