Most blocked drains in the Inner West come down to two things: old pipes and big trees.
The Inner West has some of Sydney’s oldest housing stock. Terraces and Federation homes built in the early 1900s were plumbed with clay and terracotta pipes. These materials were standard at the time but were never designed to last a century. Over time, those pipes crack, shift, and develop gaps at the joints.
That’s where the trees come in. The Inner West’s streets are lined with fig trees, plane trees and jacarandas, all with established root systems that actively seek water sources. Once roots find a gap in an old pipe, they grow in. Left alone, they completely block the flow.
Ageing clay pipes and deep-rooted trees together are what makes blocked drains in suburbs like Leichhardt, Summer Hill, and Stanmore so common. It’s also why a drain snake often isn’t enough. You need high-pressure jetting and a camera to do the job properly.
Blocked drains don’t usually give you much warning. Watch for these signs::
If water is pooling before it drains, something is restricting the flow. A single slow drain usually means a local blockage. Multiple slow drains at once point to the sewer line.
That gurgling is air trapped in the pipe, a reliable early sign of a partial blockage forming.
Built-up debris and stagnant water produce a distinct smell. In sewer lines, it can also indicate a more serious blockage further down.
Water backing up through floor drains, especially in the laundry or bathroom, is a sign the blockage is in the main drain rather than a single fixture.
If your toilet, sink, and shower all seem slow or backed up at the same time, the blockage is almost certainly in the sewer line, not in the individual pipes.
We don’t guess. Every job follows the same process – find the problem, then fix it properly.
Before any clearing work starts, we insert a waterproof CCTV camera into the drain to see exactly what’s happening. We can locate the blockage, identify the cause (roots, grease, a collapsed section) and check the condition of the pipe before we touch it. No guesswork, no unnecessary work.
High-pressure water jetting is the most effective way to clear a blocked drain. Unlike a drain snake, which pokes a hole through the blockage, jet blasting clears the full pipe wall, flushing out grease, debris, and root matter completely. It’s also safe for old clay and terracotta pipes when used correctly.
Tree root intrusion needs more than a jetter pass. We use specialised cutting heads to remove the roots from inside the pipe, then flush the line clear. After clearing, we inspect again with the camera to confirm the result and assess whether the pipe itself needs relining.
If the camera shows a cracked, collapsed, or badly misaligned pipe section, clearing the blockage won’t solve the problem permanently. We’ll explain and show you what we’ve found and provide you with options before any repair work starts so there are no surprises on your final invoice
Blocked drains don’t usually give you much warning. Watch for these signs::
Grease, fat, and food scraps are the main culprits in kitchen drain blockages. Over time, these build up on the pipe walls, narrowing the flow until the drain backs up completely. We clear kitchen drain blockages with hot water jetting and can advise on keeping them clear.
Hair and soap scum are the usual causes in showers and baths. These build up gradually in the trap and the waste pipe below the floor. Most bathroom drain blockages are straightforward to clear – we can usually have them done on the same visit.
A blocked sewer line affects all the drains in your home at once. This is the most serious type of blockage and the most common cause in older Inner West properties, usually due to tree root intrusion. We carry the equipment to clear and inspect sewer lines on the same visit. If it’s the toilet specifically, see our blocked toilets page.
Outdoor drains block with leaf matter, soil, and debris, particularly after heavy rain. If your outdoor drain is backing up or water is pooling in the yard after rain, it may be a stormwater drainage issue. See our stormwater drainage page

Blocked drains start from $139. The final price depends on the type of blockage, the location, and what the CCTV inspection finds. We confirm pricing before starting any work. See our full pricing guide
Tree roots are the most common cause in Inner West homes. The older suburbs have large established trees (figs, planes, jacarandas) with root systems that seek out water in old clay and terracotta pipes. Other common causes include grease and fat in kitchen drains, hair and soap scum in bathroom drains, and foreign objects flushed down toilets.
The main signs are slow draining, gurgling sounds from pipes or toilets, bad smells from drains, water pooling around floor drains, and multiple drains in the house behaving sluggishly at the same time. That last one in particular is a strong sign of a sewer line issue.
Yes. We offer same-day blocked drain clearing across the Inner West, including weekends. Most blockages are cleared on the first visit.
Jet blasting uses high-pressure water to clear the full pipe wall, not just punch a hole through the blockage. It’s more effective than a drain snake and safe for old clay and terracotta pipes when the operator checks the pipe condition first with a CCTV camera, which is what we do on every job.
You’re responsible for the drainage pipes on your property, up to the point where they connect to Sydney Water’s main sewer. If the blockage is in your property pipes, it’s yours to fix. If it’s in the Sydney Water main, they’re responsible. If you’re not sure which applies, give us a call; we can inspect and advise.
